Masai Mara, Kenya

The Masai Mara is a 1,510 square kilometer game reserve and is a great place to find different species of birds, animals and other types of wildlife. It was the first place we visited in Africa. We flew there from Nairobi on a small plane. As soon as we landed and got into jeeps, the first bird we saw was a Grey-headed Kingfisher, for the first time. Within one hour, we saw buffaloes, giraffes, a lion, a leopard, antelopes, elephants bathing, zebras crossing and gazelles!! We were amazed. The second Kingfisher we saw was the Giant Kingfisher. Our guide Edward was amazed at our luck, as he had never seen one either.

We spent 3 days there, doing early morning and afternoon/evening safaris. The landscapes and the sunset were very special.

My favourite bird was the Bateleur eagle. We were chasing it for 15 minutes, because we weren’t sure if was a Bateleur eagle or not. The other birds we liked were the secretary bird, hammerkop and yellow-throated longclaw.
